-Marathon Kids Program-

Marathon Kids is a running program that people are just nuts about. This will be our third year at Roberts doing it.
The program is set up so that the kids can track how far they have jogged over a course of 6 months. Once your child has completed the 26 miles and colored in the tracking chart, then they will be able to receive a Marathon Kids T-shirt.
It’s not too late to sign up. Just go to the front office and pick up an entry form and turn it into your classroom teacher. Then your child will receive a mileage tracking chart that you and your child can record the distance jogged over the course of the school year. Eight laps around on the track at Roberts equals one mile. For more information, please go to http://www.marathonkids.org/.

-Fitnessgram in P.E.-

It’s a new state law that requires all students in grades 3 and up be tested using the Fitnessgram testing program. I like this program as it doesn’t magnify a student’s weaknesses but helps them understand the importance of being fit and what they may need to improve on. For more information, please go to http://www.fitnessgram.net/home/.

-In-Line Skating-

Our fifth graders at Roberts are now working with In-Line Skating. This is a great unit to learn not only how to skate, stop, turn, skate backwards but to understand the proper way to put on all of the safety equipment. The students wear a hat, helmet, elbow, knee and wrist pads. The IB Attitudes for our skating unit are Confident, Independent, Enthusiasm and Respect. Let the fun begin!

-Pedometers-

For the next 5 weeks, the forth and fifth graders will be wearing pedometers. Each student will wear their own pedometer all day and will be able to track how many steps they have taken as well as how far that they have traveled for that day. Their goal is to take 10,000 steps each day.

-Climbing Wall-
AKA The Decision Wall)

The 3rd and 4th grade kids will start their upper body unit.
They will be working on the Climbing Ropes and the Decision Wall.
This year we have two climbing ropes. One rope has bigger assistant knots then the other so that all the students can achieve success. If a student can reach the top then they get to ring the cow bell.
The IB Profiles that we will cover are Thinker, Open Minded, Self-Esteem and Risk Taker.

-Math in P.E.-

K, 1st and 2nd graders will be doing a Math unit.
Skip counting during Cals and their favorite game of all time. No, not Dodge Ball but a game called Witches Brew. This game is a fun math game that incorporates counting, values, comparing, honesty as well as running, tagging and having fun. Ask them about it.

-After School Gymnastics-

There is still time for our students in grades 1-5 to sign up for this program.
Our Gymnastics program this year practices after school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 until 5pm. We have over 80 students signed up so far. We are working on cartwheels, forward rolls, backward rolls, balancing skills, backbends and soon we will introduce the P- bars and uneven bars.
If you are interested in this program, your child can pick up a gymnastics slip at the office.

-Track Team-

We welcome all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders to come out for the Track Team. We will be participating in Roberts Track Meet in March. One of the oldest track meets in Houston.
Track practice is held after school from 3:15 until 4:15 Monday’s and Wednesdays.
This year’s track coaches are Ms. Shroff and Mr. Thielke.
If you are interested in signing up, please see Ms. Shroff for a permission slip.
